A little something about Jesus from Valerie:

Growing up, I admired Jesus, although I had never met him, and it was because everyone had something nice to say about him. I didn’t understand the gravity of his achievements at such an early age, but I remember it. Like how numerous restaurants would let my family eat for free because Jesus helped their family. Or how two blocks were covered in funeral flowers when he died. Or how Jesus never had any money on him because he kept giving it away. Or how Jesus would come home with wilting or already wilted flowers because he’d buy those from the flower vendors at church. These were stories of so much generosity, and it was amazing to me because Jesus didn’t have money to pay for public transportation. He’d have to walk hours daily just to travel to school.

Jesus has a fantastic story. From nothing, he became the governor of his province just months before one of the most challenging times of Philippine history - the Japanese occupation during World War 2.  And one core belief that my family holds close to themselves is that what is meant to happen will happen. And I think that he was the governor of Laguna during that time for a reason. There were numerous instances when he and his family came so close to death, but they survived through some unexpected miracles.

This script is more than Jesus’s story and my family’s story. This is the story of the Philippines because Jesus represents not only Laguna but the Philippines. He came from poverty. His single mother strived to put him through school. And when he finally had his degree and his law license, he pulled his family and a whole nation out of poverty because he helped thousands and thousands of people. If you go to my country right now, you will see how deeply ingrained the nation is in poverty and self-hatred. The masses dream of sending their kids to school and believe that beauty is attained through bleaching their skin, and a lot of times, the government just ignores their hunger and cries. Jesus didn’t forget the masses. He was for them until the day he died, and Jesus became governor not because he wanted to but because the people wanted him.

I will say more of his achievements, but that would ruin the whole film :)

Love,

Val
